Practice #2: make high-quality close and distant perspective field recordings with a field recorder

Tutorial

Goal: make close and distant perspective field recordings with a field recorder.

Purpose: To become familiar with the H4N field recorders that are available in the Media Arts Equipment bank and which will be super useful for your first sound art projects in this course. To explore the difference between close and distant perspective field recordings in an embodied way (i.e. when you are the one making the two recordings, and then listening to them, you will learn things about recording you wouldn't learn any other way).

Specifications: You will receive credit for a submission (in the appropriate Avenue folder) that meets ALL of the following specifications:

All of the elements of the submission are in a folder inside a ZIP archive, uploaded to this assignment on Avenue The submission contains TWO newly created WAV files containing raw field recordings: (1) one with a close perspective on some object or source, and (2) the other with a distant perspective on a sound scene. Please include the word "close" in the filename of the close perspective recording and the word "distant" in the filename of the distant perspective recording.

Please note that you will probably be working in pairs/small groups during the tutorial - each member of each pair/group must make THEIR OWN close and distant perspective recordings, so be sure to take turns and help each other do this.

More detailed instructions for this area of technical practice will be provided live, in your in-person tutorial sections, which will involved guided work in pairs with a Zoom H4N field recorder.
